Hello. Today’s blog post is brought to you by comfort pro Heat and Air Choctaw OK located in Choctaw, Oklahoma. We are a family owned and operated heating and air company. We specialize in residential and light commercial installation, service repair, air conditioning, repair, maintenance contracts, seasonal maintenance, preventative maintenance. And today we’re going talk about refrigerants for Heat and Air Choctaw OK units, also known as freon. Refrigerants are vital for Heat and Air Choctaw OK.

Refrigerants are vital for air conditioning and heat pump systems. These fluids act as transport vehicles for heat from your home to outside in summer and vice versa for heat pump during those winter. Over the years, various chemicals have been used in an attempt to get the right balance of properties for this critical task. Here are some important facts about refrigerants, a brief history of refrigerants. The first practical refrigerator was invented by an Australian named James Harrison who used ether or alcohol or ammonia as the refrigerant. These early refrigerants proved toxic, so in the 1920s scientists came up with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs for short, which were nontoxic and stable.

Unfortunately, after about five decades of accumulation in the atmosphere, scientists discovered that this was destroying the ozone layer. The Montreal protocol was signed in an effort to reduce the amount of CFCs released into the air. Of course that meant finding something else to keep everyone cool. We have since moved to hydro chloro fluorocarbons or h CFCs and hydrofluorocarbons hfcs to chemicals that are less damaging to the ozone layer, but not even these new refrigerants are perfect because they contain fluorine, which has a high global warming potential. The most commonly used refrigerants your air conditioning most likely has one of the two refrigerants most commonly used for residential air conditioners are our 22 a CFC, also known as Freon and R410 and HFC free of chlorine R22 is still in use in older air conditioners because of the Montreal protocol. It is being phased out in 2020 manufacturers of new freon for new Heat and Air Choctaw OK units.

We’ll stop R410-A is now widely available. If you have a unit installed within the last 10 years or so, you probably have this type of refrigerant. Should you change the refrigerant or change the whole system? Replacing R22 with R410-A is not as simple as changing the refrigerant. R410-A operates at a higher pressure and usually uses a synthetic lubricating oil. While R22 uses a petroleum based oil, the compressor, condenser, and evaporator must all be replaced. The refrigerant lines may be reused if able to withstand the higher pressure four units near the end of their life, it’s better to replace them and gain the benefits of higher efficiency with the refrigerant that is better for the environment. If your heat pump or air conditioning system still uses the old refrigerant and you’d like to upgrade to a safer alternative, or if you want to get the efficiency that comes with a new system, give us a call to fix the Heat and Air Choctaw OK and we’ll help you get cooling without the environmental issues.

Impacts of refrigerants on the ozone layer since its invention in 1902 the air conditioning unit has become a staple piece of equipment in business institutions and homes around the world. Air conditioners come in many sizes and configurations from large central chiller systems to small window units, but what do they have in common? Air conditioners all use refrigerants to transfer heat to the outdoors and the early days of air conditioning. The options for refrigerants were ammonia, methanol, chloride, methyl chloride and sulfur dioxide. Methyl and sulfur dioxide are both toxic and were replaced with chlorofluorocarbons in the 1920s we use these for decades before discovering the drawbacks. The hole in the ozone layer was discovered in the 1970s that the ozone layer had been experiencing an overall reduction and concentration by about 4% per decade and these severe annual springtime depletion over the pop polar regions and the 1985 the British Antarctic survey thought that their instrumentation was faulty because the layers of ozone had been dropped dramatically in these Heat and Air Choctaw OK systems.

The main cause of this depletion was traced back to the rampant use of manmade substances containing flow chlorofluorocarbons, which were released into the atmosphere from aerosols and refrigerants. CFC is breakdown in sunlight to release chlorine and bromine which destroy ozone molecules. The polar regions are more susceptible to ozone depletion because of the formation of polar stratospheric clouds caused by cold temperatures in these regions. These clouds provide the ideal conditions for the chemical reactions that break down ozone molecules, hence their ozone levels drop to lower levels than the rest of the globe creating holes. The Montreal Protocol in on September, 1987 was introduced to outline the phasing out of the ozone depleting refrigerants. This treaty defined the timeline for introducing alternatives that would not affect the ozone layer. The total of 197 states signed it, making it the most successful international treaty today. Since then, we have moved away from refrigerants containing ozone depleting substances and more recently refrigerants that contain contributed to global warming. So if you want to change out your system, be sure and call comfort pro heating and air where we would be glad to give you a free estimate and get you off of our 22 and get on to our four 10 a so you can enjoy the benefits of better comfort, better air filtration, better air flow, and most of all better humidity control, lower energy bills. And that would be a great thing for you and your family. Thank you and have a good day.
