We have since moved to hydro chloro fluorocarbons or h CFCs and hydrofluorocarbons hfcs to chemicals that are less damaging to the ozone layer, but not even these new refrigerants are perfect because they contain fluorine, which has a high global warming potential. The most commonly used refrigerants your air conditioning most likely has one of the two refrigerants most commonly used for residential air conditioners are our 22 a CFC, also known as Freon and R410 and HFC free of chlorine R22 is still in use in older air conditioners because of the Montreal protocol. It is being phased out in 2020 manufacturers of new freon for new Heat and Air Choctaw OK units.

Impacts of refrigerants on the ozone layer since its invention in 1902 the air conditioning unit has become a staple piece of equipment in business institutions and homes around the world. Air conditioners come in many sizes and configurations from large central chiller systems to small window units, but what do they have in common? Air conditioners all use refrigerants to transfer heat to the outdoors and the early days of air conditioning. The options for refrigerants were ammonia, methanol, chloride, methyl chloride and sulfur dioxide. Methyl and sulfur dioxide are both toxic and were replaced with chlorofluorocarbons in the 1920s we use these for decades before discovering the drawbacks. The hole in the ozone layer was discovered in the 1970s that the ozone layer had been experiencing an overall reduction and concentration by about 4% per decade and these severe annual springtime depletion over the pop polar regions and the 1985 the British Antarctic survey thought that their instrumentation was faulty because the layers of ozone had been dropped dramatically in these Heat and Air Choctaw OK systems.
